Hurray for Grizzly Groundswell!  I’m glad Chad asked me to post here.  Although I never paid much attention to politics and government before, this past year I discovered I have strong feelings concerning some of the things going on around us.  Grizzly Groundswell will be a great outlet for these feelings.

I’ve never chosen any particular political party but I seem to lean quite a bit to the conservative side of things.  That said, let me share my spooky Halloween musings:

  • Wind energy–something North Dakota has the potential to become very strong in–has some scary contract things going on.  Read here (wind rights:  wind resources blog) concerning wind contracts and how they might limit landowners.  I’m really not sure what to think about this one.  Feedback and its consequent education would be very much appreciated.
  • Along the same lines, how long before someone proposes legislation to separate wind rights from land ownership?  I think in North Dakota some mineral rights can be sold separately from land, and I know the idea of selling hunting rights separately from land ownership came up in the past North Dakota legislative session.  It seemed a bit intrusive to even have to bring it up.  Still not sure what I think about that one, either.
  • When did it become okay to brainwash our college students?  Read the recent Say Anything post here.
  • Okay.  One more pet peeve, and I know it’s really no one’s fault–when did the idea of assessment testing in schools become the children’s problem and not the teacher’s problem?  What good does it do any child to know they are being compared against other children in their school, in their state and in their nation?  Weren’t those tests originally meant just to help teachers know what topics to spend more time on?  I do believe the teachers in Mandan are, for the most part, doing an incredible job under the pressures the system places on them–it’s just sad that there’s so much pressure to compete to begin with.

And that leads me to my final, frightening conclusion:  what happens to the world if we allow more and more system control over our daily choices?  We become zombies, that’s what.  It gives a whole new meaning to Patrick Henry’s Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death statement

Now that I’ve shared my nightmares, let me share some Halloween fun:

  • Home Sweet Home…a North Dakota haunting
  • Halloween Hangman.  It’s actually funny to be insulted by a skeleton.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, but be warned:  precious work minutes can slip away.

Happy Halloween, everyone!
