Sunday, October 5, Life Chains were done in numerous cities and towns across the nation and in Canada, recognizing the need for protection of the most vulnerable segment of humanity, the unborn. The events involved people silently standing along roadways holding signs proclaiming the harm that abortion does to children and women, as well as the existence of the inalienable right to life, and the loving option of adoption.
Cody, WY was host to one such event. Nearly 80 people showed up to stand for the cause at 16th and Sheridan, one of the city’s busiest intersections. Billings, MT, approximately ten times the size of Cody, had 100 at their event.
I was there and it was an amazing 60 minutes to be part of. I select to hold a sign that read Adoption: the loving option. Being an adoptee, I can certainly relate to that statement.
It was amazing to see the diverse reactions of passers-by. Many waved; some positively honked their horns, and others gave us a thumbs up while mouthing phrases like “Good job” and “Way to go.” Motorcyclists even passed by with a supportive thumbs up.
Still other passers-by were so terribly offended that the best response they could muster was a particular raised finger. The lack of civility on their part is like unto people that have written to my friend and Congressional Candidate of choice Cynthia Lummis. I don’t mind people disagreeing, especially in politics. It’s bound to happen. Even the ever-charming Sarah Palin has noted her disagreement with Sen. McCain on drilling in ANWR and pulling out of Michigan. What we do need is a civility in our disagreement. We can have our opinions without stooping to include profanity in our descriptions.
The signs we displayed condemned no one. There were no “shock and awe” pictures of “aborted” babies; not even any graphic descriptions. Perhaps the most “graphic” thing that was said is that abortion kills children. The only thing we were doing was condemning the practice of abortion, and offering hope to those that have had an abortion (Jesus Forgives and Heals), and alternative choices for undesired pregnancy (Adoption is the loving option). We were standing publicly for what we believe because we could.
Our assembly was peaceful, we obstructed no foot or vehicle traffic. Police cars drove by four or five times in the hour and not once had to stop to get us under control or else. One did stop for about five minutes, but the officer never left his car, nor did he turn his emergency lights on. He just stopped and observed, then went on his way.
I was near the northeast corner of the intersection and on one red light, a lady could be silent no longer and rolled down her window, asking what had brought “all this” on, as if to say that political activists like us only awaken, stand up, and speak up to change the political landscape in our back yard after something happens.
I explained that we were just taking a stand for our belief and that in fact events like this were going on all across the nation that day. That apparently wasn’t good enough, so she inquired as to who in Cody had an abortion. Since I had already explained that scope of the event, and I noticed that traffic in front of her was moving, I simply said “No one.”
You don’t have to wait for something to happen to express your opinion. Granted, certain events cause people to be a little bit bolder in their belief, but sometimes, you just need to initiate the subject. If just one person that drove by became convinced that abortion is wrong, even if they were only provoked into considering their stance on the issue, our efforts were worth it.
There is less than a monthuntil the elction on November 4. Before you go into the voting booth or fill out your absentee ballot, consider what the candidates believe about when life begins. John McCain and Sarah Palin are both firmly in the belief that life begins at the moment of conception. Here in Wyoming, we are blessed with two brilliant Senators, one of whom is a formerly abortion tollerating doctor, that hold to that same line of thought. We also have another pro-life convert in Cynthia Lummis, who is running to be our lone vote in the House of Representatives. May God give them the strength to maintain their stand, boldly and courageously, and may He bless our nation and state with their elections.
