Why All the Bickering? By Michael A. Minton
I just cannot understand why in the world all the various groups who have 30,000 different ways to solve the energy “crisis” cannot get together and formulate a plan which could both help solve the problem, and could profitably put these big oil companies into renewable energies, and thus keep them from bankruptcy.
Right now, we buy, if memory serves, roughly sixty-five percent of our oil from overseas adversaries. This number could be dramatically reduced, if not ELIMINATED ALL TOGETHER if we would just work together and open up a small amount of the land that we have at our disposal. As long as we do it responsibly and not just tear the land up like there’s no tomorrow, it will be a great way to tap into a vast supply of “carry-over” (my word) energy.
Carry-over energy, or carry-over oil, as I have come to call it in my grand scheme, is the amount we would need to carry us over from dependence on Middle-Eastern oil, as well as oil from other countries which we consider hostile toward the United States, to complete energy independence by using alternative fuels; solar, wind, nuclear, etc.
Then, once we have all the cards in place and we can have all of our alternative energies online in the next five, ten, or even fifteen years…BAM! You tree-hugging liberals can shut down the drilling operation in this country indefinitely as far as I am concerned.
During this carry-over time of ten to fifteen years, as we are supplying our own country’s oil, the very oil companies that are now enjoying record-breaking, windfall quarterly profits, well, they can be investing some of those record profits in the new technologies and greener fuel alternatives.
The liberal left thinks it can “spread the wealth” (kind of smacks of Socialism, don’t you think?) of big oil by demanding that they pay a “windfall tax” on their unprecedented record profits. Folks let me tell you something: if you honestly think that big oil is just going to take it on the chin, without passing any of this “windfall tax” onto you, I’ve got some “ocean-front property in Arizona.”
This can work, folks. Americans have never been known as quitters. If we choose to make history, God will bless us, and we will have many more centuries of good citizenship and good stewardship. But if we choose to let history make us, well, I am afraid that we will go the way of all great societies who came before us.
Either way, it is indeed up to us.
