McCain - Obama: Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum
I am listening to the July 13, 2008 edition of “Meet the Press”. The first segment’s guests: McCain campaign representative Carly Fiorina and Obama campaign representative Claire McCaskill (D-Mo). The primary topics: Iraq and the state of the US economy. Listening to the statements made by both campaign representatives with respect to “fixing the economy” is painful and depressing for one simple reason: they show that both candidates are more than willing to use the coercive power of government to enforce conformity their respective world views. Thinking voters realize something that eludes the bureaucratic elite: The best way to “fix” the economy is to observe the Hippocratic oath: First do no harm. Economies are invariably subject to the laws of supply and demand. Government schemes that ignore this fact do unending harm to their citizens by igniting the law of unintended consequences. It must also be steadfastly noted that Presidents do not “run” economies nor should we want or allow them to do so. Kleptomania, despotism and general chaos characterize those economies which permit their policy officials to “run” their economies. (Think Zimbabwe and North Korea) as extreme examples. America’s economic system will function much better when its citizens look to themselves and to each other for solutions. Politicians and their conformist schemes are invariably part of the problem, good intentions not withstanding.
