When those who have given their lives for freedom of this country are honored, a poem is usually read.
“The muffled drum’s sad roll has beat
The soldier’s last tattoo;
No more on life’s parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few,
On Fame’s eternal camping ground
Their silent tents are spread;
And glory guards with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead.”
Monday we celebrate Memorial Day, and remember those who have their tents spread in the eternal camping ground—–
The 25,000 who died in the American Revolution,
The 562,000 who died in the War Between the States,
The 116,000 who died in the First World War
The 408,000 who died in the war to end all wars
The 54,000 who died in Korea in the forgotten war,
The 58,000 who died in the rice patties of Vietnam
The 363 who died in the first Gulf war,
And the 4,076, so far who have given their lives in the war on terror,
May every day be a Memorial Day in our lives.
