Hey Big Oil; Here Are Some More Inane Hearings For You
Because we want to continue to hammer the public with trying to make you look like the bad guys in this mess. Because we don’t want anyone to know that it is really us in the House and Senate that are screwing the pants off of the public in this gas-fiasco. We’d rather you took the blame so we can continue to feed our insatiable tax-and-spend habits.
We know that diverting oil from the National Reserve isn’t going to do crap for the cost of fuel beyond a few cents a gallon. But we want people to “feeeeeel” good, so they will continue to vote for us.
We in the House and Senate feel you would be best to take the brunt of public ire on account of your record profits (that you rightfully managed to earn on a meager 10% profit margin.) But we won’t be mentioning to anyone that we regularly vote OURSELVES massive raises without the publics approval. Speaking of which, we would never get a raise in our current status of having a lower public approval rating than the President has. I guess our “100 Hours” crap isn’t fooling the public anymore.
So you are nominated as our next “weapon of mass distraction!”
We also believe that it’s in every one’s (but yours) best interest if you take the fall for the fuel costs. We don’t want people to start digging into how much TAX we’ve added over the years to the cost of fuel. Tax revenue that’s “supposed” to help maintain our roadways and other infrastructure, (like collapsing bridges) but usually ends up in our own pockets, one way or another. Nor do we want anyone to think about the amount of tax we take out of their paychecks (in my case, about 1/3 of my pay goes to taxes,) which only adds to the burden.
And we really want you guys to get the axe, so to speak, because if we had to open up ANWAR and offshore areas to drilling, we’d loose all our backdoor buddy money that we cherish from our enviro-lobbyist cadre. Now you wouldn’t really want that to happen to us would you? Nor do we want anyone to realize that the taxpayers “foot the bill” every time we have one of these showboat trials.
So just sit there and pretend to cower under our non-existent might of senseless hearings that will amount to gaining no new knowledge beyond what everyone already knows. That we get 90% of our oil from overseas because we won’t drill in our own backyard. That China and India are adding about 1 million cars a months to their roadways due to their now burgeoning economies. And that other countries are willing to pay higher prices for the oil.
Way to go $8.00 per gallon prices in most of Europe. We’ll be there soon too.
By the way Senator Leahy. If you want to respond to your constituents about why they can’t get to work because they can’t afford the gas, don’t mention any of the points I mentioned here. It may not be a pretty episode for you.
