I recently posted about news from the New Hampshire political grapevine, in this post I wrote about Jeb Bradley. Jeb was my congressman until Carol Shea-Porter beat him in an upset in 2006. Jeb has decided to run again, he does have a primary opponent, but I am supporting Jeb Bradley. When I made this post Chad asked me if I could write to Jeb and ask him if he could write something for the Grizzly Groundswell. His website doesn’t yet have a contact link, so for now I will post an article that he wrote that appeared in an E-zine called Elephant Prints, here it is:

As I travel throughout the First Congressional District talking with Republicans and gearing up for my own campaign, I continue to sense renewed optimism and enthusiasm for the 2008 elections.  I have had the opportunity to listen to a lot of folks talk about issues most important to them including healthcare, taxes and spending.  They’ve expressed major concern over congressional earmarks, immigration and terrorism.  Constituents are closely watching Carol Shea-Porter’s votes on all of these issues and are alarmed because her record does not reflect the values of the First District. Instead of independence from Washington, Carol Shea-Porter is demonstrating that she is in lock-step with the Democratic leadership and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. New Hampshire has always prided itself on limited government and low taxes, yet Carol Shea-Porter voted for the largest tax increase in history that would roll back the 2003 tax cuts which created over 8 million new jobs.  She has also voted to increase taxes on Americans’ health care policies and energy production. How does increasing taxes on health insurance and energy make either more affordable?  Carol Shea-Porter has also voted to increase taxes on foreign owned companies that employ over 5 million Americans and are some of the biggest employers in New Hampshire.  The Democrats and Carol Shea-Porter promised voters their top priority was to reduce spending, yet they have done anything but since being in Congress and in the majority. Raising taxes is a necessity when you are on a spending spree. Thankfully  the President has indicated he will veto several of these bills.  Then there are earmarks. I routinely voted against these spending requests of individual members of Congress. Carol Shea-Porter has voted for virtually every single one of them. These earmarks have included federal funding for the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, the San Francisco Exploratorium, the Rangel Center for Public Service, the Houston Zoo, genetic research of grapes and a prison museum in Kansas. Why are New Hampshire taxpayers funding these pork barrel projects? It is also disturbing that Carol Shea-Porter refuses to reveal what funding requests she has supported.  On immigration, Carol Shea-Porter has voted on several occasions to ensure that illegal aliens get taxpayer funded benefits for housing, health care and even social security. Yet, when she had a chance to fund the security fence on the southern border, she voted against it. On keeping our country safe from terrorism, Carol Shea-Porter has seemingly forgotten that our technological advantage has protected Americans from this threat. On a recent vote to allow our national security agencies to monitor communications of foreign terrorists in foreign nations, Carol Shea-Porter voted instead for creating huge paperwork burdens rather than a quick response to apprehend terror suspects. If you would like to discuss these votes with Carol Shea-Porter, she has finally scheduled town hall meetings. Find out where she’ll be and start asking her to explain her votes. Perhaps this would be the appropriate time to ask her if she will return campaign contributions from MoveOn.Org after their disgraceful ad that portrayed General Petraeus (Commander of American troops in Iraq) as General ‘Betray Us’.  I enjoyed the 128 town hall meetings I held when in office as it was a chance to talk to voters in an informal atmosphere. I spoke about why I voted for tax relief for families and small businesses, the steps taken to shrink the budget deficit, or measures to make health care more accessible and affordable without the government running our entire health care system. I discussed how important it is to secure our southern border and not reward illegal immigration with amnesty.  Lastly, I spoke about supporting our troops by supporting the funding and resources they need when in harm’s way and my successful efforts to increase veteran’s health care funding.  I look forward to debating these issues with Carol Shea-Porter in 2008.  With your support, team oriented effort, and your vote, our conservative values will once again be represented in our nation’s capitol.
