Some thoughts on Michigan…

It’s official: the Republican nomination has become a whimsical sweepstakes. Quick, go file some election papers and you might have a shot at winning one of the remaining primaries. I’m doing some internal polling of my own right now and finding out that I’d probably be a better cult leader than president. Kool-Aid, anyone?

So what do we have to look forward to now? Fred winning South Carolina? Rudy winning Florida? Ron Paul winning Jupiter?

Now that Mitt Romney has had success as a native son, look for him to start saying that his birthplace has “evolved” and he now firmly believes he’s from South Carolina. Congratulations to Mitt for winning by telling Michigan workers exactly what they wanted to hear, that the federal government would come bail them out. But, hey, Hugh Hewitt and Rush keep saying that he’s a Republican so it must be true.

The Democrats had an interesting evening as well. Hillary Clinton beat out “Uncommitted” by a margin of fifteen percent. Ironically, “Uncommitted” is the Secret Service code name for her husband when he’s out campaigning with her. Elsewhere for the Dems, Dennis Kucinich received 3.66% of the vote. That figure directly corresponds to the number of registered voters in Michigan who have voluntarily stopped taking anti-psychotic medication in recent weeks. Look for Kucinich to stay in the race until someone hits him with Mike Gravel.

The anti-McCain hatespeak is now running at a fever pitch on the right. What confuses me is how many of the pundits and talk radio hosts who spew nonstop vitriol at McCain for his occasional legislative lunacy can talk about Romney’s viability with straight faces. The guy has done so many 180s that his campaign slogan should be “That Hearfelt Conviction Was So 24 Hours Ago!” If you can stand on principle while despising McCain but twist yourself into an ideological knot to get behind Mitt you’re eligible for nomination to the Self Deception Hall of Fame.

What the GOP faithful had better realize in a hurry is that both the Madame and the Saint are already well positioned to win in November because, as Democrats, they never have to say anything substantive in a campaign. They simply promise free everything forever and tell the electorate that the mean Republicans will take all that away. That unsustainable message takes hold about once every generation and the time seems rather ripe for that now. Remember, the American voting public is still heavily polluted populated with people who thought Nancy Pelosi could do a good job. Chances are than none of them will be sober by the time November rolls around.

Let’s see what new political psychoses South Carolina can add to the Republican cluster(rhymes with “Huck”). Fred’s finally got some money to spend. Let’s hope that does him some good. Chucklebee is already trying to rally the pastors. How come there’s never a separation of church and state when you actually need one?

One last thing. There’s been a lot of talk on the right this week about whether or not this was the end of the Reagan era. All I know is that Ronald Reagan spent more time looking into the future than pining for days gone by.

So, you tell me.
